Artificial intelligence improvements on Android: Google brings AI to Messages and Android Auto

Google has announced new AI-enhancing functionality on the Android platform, including the integration of the Gemini AI model into the Messages app and the introduction of AI message summaries in Android Auto.

While it won't be unveiling any new phones at this year's MWC in Barcelona, Google has announced several improvements, including artificial intelligence enhancements that will enrich the user experience on its platforms. The Gemini AI model will be integrated into the Messages app, while Android Auto will get the feature of smart text-to-voice summaries of messages while driving, based on artificial intelligence.

Starting this week, Messages users will be able to access the Google chatbot without leaving the messaging app. Gemini in Messages will be able to perform basic tasks like writing messages and help plan events, as well as provide a fun feature to chat with users. The feature is currently in beta and is only available to English-language Messages users, according to Google.

Android Auto is also getting an AI boost that could reduce distractions from texting while driving. In case of crowded group chats or long messages, Android Auto will automatically condense the messages and read a shorter version to the user, as well as suggest responses and actions based on the messages, such as sharing arrival times.

Google also announced new accessibility features for Android at the show, including AI-generated image descriptions in the Lookout app. This feature will allow users to get descriptions for images found on the Internet or received in English-language messages.

The Google Lens feature in the Maps app is also getting an improved screen reader option, which will allow users to use their phone's camera to get information about objects in front of them, such as restaurants or public transport stations.

The Android updates also include new controls for Spotify called Spotify Connect, which allows users to seamlessly switch from device to device, such as switching from headphones to a speaker. The feature is already available for the YouTube Music service, and is now rolling out to Spotify, with the potential to expand to other streaming apps in the future.
